Marty McFly contemplates the original MAG shoes, in Back to the Future II.

In the totally awesome movie trilogy Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly travels to the year 2015, and wears the Nike MAG shoe, which was often called “The Greatest Shoe Never Made.” Well no longer! NIKE says about the MAG shoes: It came alive, lit up and formed to Marty’s foot. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

Not only are these an almost inconceivable tangible creation of every 80s’ kids’ wet dreams, but these shoes were also made with a greater purpose in mind:

1500 pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG will be auctioned on eBay with all net proceeds going directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each day for the duration of the ten-day auction, one hundred and fifty pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes will be made available via eBay’s Fashion Vault. The auction starts September 8, 8:30PM PST, and will end September 18. Thanks to a previous 50 million dollar match given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, all donations will be matched, effectively doubling the contributions from the auction.

With a worthy cause, an amazingly kickass shoe, and the supporting background of over 25 years of Back to the Future fandom, you can bet that Bubble Punch was on the scene to report on the opening party so that EVERYONE could experience this incredible event.

The slogan of the event was “IT’S ABOUT TIME,” referring to the overlying theme that the effort of the Nike AG was focused supporting research to provide a future without Parkinson’s disease.

The release party was held at the Monteblan theater in Hollywood, with a huge crowd of fans lined up down and around for blocks.Unfortunately, we heard that most people in line did not make it in

Of COURSE the time traveling DeLorean was there! Bubble Punch's Chubby Bunny was able to attend the event, thanks to our buddy Jessica (right) who is an awesome friend.

Upon entering, a huge wall full of Nike MAGs was displayed in a darkly lit plexiglass case that stretched to the cieling, with only the lights of the MAGs shining through. (Don't worry, they light them up properly later, and we have photos!)

NIKE was selling limited edition ceramic replicas of the MAG. Having produced only 350 of these, and ONLY selling them at this event, these little guys are sure to be a huge collectors' item.

Throughout the Monteblan’s 2 tiered lobby, there were displays of props and costumes from the Back to the Future movies!

The almanac that CHANGED THE FUTURE! Stupid Marty McFly! Don't just TOSS a valuable book! BURN IT PROPERLY!

CONTROLS THINGS LIKE... THE FUTURE!!!

There was even a CAFE 80s REPLICA BUILT INTO THE LOBBY!!! SO cool!

BIFF'S FACE IS ON THE MONEY!! OMGGG!!! These were laying in the trays of candy on the bar... but we weren't allowed to take it ;.;

There was even a rad green screen photobooth where you can "ride a hover board while wearing MAGs!" Chubby Bunny poses appropriately! As close as you'll ever get to actually wearing them, unless you have about $10k to throw down on the real deal.

After milling about the lobby, we were all ushered into the theater area, where the crazy awesome events were about to unfold.

araabMUZIK performs an opening set, complete with 80s music from the Back to the Future movies. SO AMAZING.

And out steps JOEL MCHALE (From "Community" and "The Soup", but you already knew that right?)

Joel did a quick comedic intro to the event, and then introduced this fake "deleted scene" from the Back to the Future movies... Bill Hader assists Kevin Durant in buying a pair of Nike MAGS, when suddenly Christopher Lloyd stops in seeking the "self-lacing" sneakers of 2015. Oops. Wrong year, bro!

A quick futuristic video displayed this, followed by, "An auction benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research."

And then.. CHRISTOPHER LLOYD CAME OUT!!! =D This is where the tears started to flow.

Joel joked, "It must be in your contract that everytime you make an appearance you have to appear in a bunch of lighting smoke."

Then, NIKE MAG designer, and all around LEGENDARY shoe engineer (he invented the original PUMP shoe!), Tinker Hatfield came out to be interviewed by Joel about the MAG. Tinker insists that these are the first generation of the MAG shoes, and by 2015, the REAL Nike MAG will be released with SELF LACING ABILITY just like in the movie! GO TINKER, GO!!!

And then.. the moment we had all been waiting for... THE DEBUT OF THE NIKE MAG!!!!!

Michael J. Fox couldn't be at the event beacuse he was on David Letterman that night promoting the MAG and his foundation, but he did this quick and really moving video talking about Parkinson's and how we all can help contribute to ending this disease via research.

And then.. the MONEY MAKING portion of the night started..

First up, was an auction for a ceramic replica of the Nike MAG, signed by Nike designer guru Tinker Hatfield!

He even drew the famous clocktower!

And then. the main event…. a pair of Nike MAGs, which came complete with the futuristic case, and that would be SIGNED by Michael J. Fox!!!!!

Joel and a professional auctioneer begin the auction in earnest... well almost, as Joel suggests they start the bidding at 500 million dollars and is denied. Joel also offers that whoever wins the shoes will also receive a toy Labradoodle puppy from himself as well. Not sure if that panned out or not.

Sorry for the terrible blurry photo, but the WINNER of the auction was UK Rap musical superstar Tinie Tempeh, who won the auction at $37,500!! Did Joel give him the dog?

After the end of the auction, the Nike MAGs on the display wall in the lobby were lit up properly, to celebrate the “release,” and amazing photos were to be had.

I think everyone was resisting the urge to try and punch through the plexiglass covering to get some shoes, haha.

Mostly just for fun, we were happy to assist in throwing some magic sparkles and, duh, bubbles, to the mix to create a super fun entry for the parade that had kids chasing after us for candy and sparkles!

Norco, also known as Horsetown, USA, is an amazing little town located in the Inland Empire, about an hour east of Los Angeles, where everyone gets around via horseback! Instead of sidewalks, there are horsetrails all around town, and every local business is required to have a horse hitching area to “park” customers’ preferred method of transport: their horse friends!

The parade is made up of lots of local residents of Norco, who enter their horses, pets, school bands, and floats into the parade and throw candy into the crowd.

We were so lucky to have Martini Ranch Carriages let us ride in their amazing white carriage, pulled by the ever lovely Molly, who dressed up as a Unicorn for the occasion!

We were excited to have Will Bradley on hand to take lots of cute photos during the parade! CHeck out this other carriage from the parade! Fit for... well.. a couple of princesses! Inside are a few of the Norco Beauty Pageant Winners!

Did you know mini horses can pull their own carraiges, too? These guys were also part of our parade troupe! Caro is ont he left reaching for candy to throw to the kids! She was in charge of the beautifully huge dog for the parade!

There were even some colorful dogs present at the parade too! Look at these cuties!

The parade was super fun and the people were so nice! We were sad that it was over around 1pm, but excited to check out the fair at the end of the parade trail! We ate a ton of food, took photos, and rode on SO MANY RIDES! It was good, old fashion fun!

Justice League #1 cover (Don't worry, they de-pants-ed Wonder Woman in the final version)

Before we get to the event, here’s a little back story on this historic DC Comics reboot:
In a bold move, DC (their most commonly known characters being Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and The Flash) is revamping all of their current titles, and renumbering them, starting over again from number one. The “New 52″, as it’s being called, begins the stories of all of the DCU (Detective Comics Universe) from the start, in an attempt to remove the confusion of the past 50 or so years of continuity and give a fresh start so that the story lines and characters are more accessible to the modern reader. That’s right, now readers like us who have lapsed in our comic collecting (most common problem: We’re not sure what the hell is going on anymore!) have a chance to enter the comic universe again without worrying about that pesky back story! Some of the major changes include:

• Superman and Lois aren’t married anymore! Gasp!
• Younger characters revamped and some new ones added, and hey! Tim Drake’s Red Robin costume is pretty sweet looking! Go Teen Titans!
• Detective Comics, for which the company is named goes back to #1 again, too!
• Dick Grayson is back as Nightwing
• Barbara Gordon, is back as Batgirl, and no longer bound to a wheelchair acting in the superhero world as The Oracle.
• Wonder Woman’s costume had pants for a split second before DC got all confused with themselves and got it changed back to No-pants Land.
• But alas, Superman doesn’t have outside-red-briefs anymore! Pants-land for Supes! Oh and he’s wearing some sort of turtle-necked leotard, too.

At 10:30pm, the party opened up to tons of comic fans gathering to celebrate the release!

Bubble Punch's Chubby Bunny made a quick Wonder Woman outfit for the event.

The night started out with a comedic set by Tom Franck of Comics and Comics.

The back event space was pretty packed!

Then, guests in costume were invited up to the stage to show off their garb for a chance to win ALL 52 titles!!

Sorry guys, but this bro is the WINNER in our minds! Check out that 'stache! Green Arrow and Black Canary!

Ruby Rocket as Batgirl! Someone from the crowd shouted "WHERE'S YOUR WHEELCHAIR?" She responded by making this snarky face and saying "IT'S A REBOOT, BITCH!" Haha. We love her.

A Burton-esque Catwoman! She was dedicated.. and even did the severe white makeup thing!

After the contest, it was almost midnight so everyone rushed back out to the front of the store to line up to buy Flashpoint #5 and Justice League #1!

A huge line of awesome ensued.

After fans got their purchases wrapped up (Meltdown was even having a 20% off of all DC products sale this night!), they returned to the back room for a Q&A with Scott Lobdell (writer of Teen Titans, Superboy) and Kyle Higgins (writer of Nightwing, Deathstroke). Unfortunately, we don’t have any photos of the talk, but we found this great fan video recap of the night, so take a look below to experience some of the geeky action!

Sweet Streets, in collaboration with Crowded Teeth curated an amazing group show with artists such as: Luke Chueh, Eimi, Miso, Martin Hsu, NICO, Mizna Wada, Angry Woebots, among many talented artists.

All of the art was inspired by the works of Crowded Teeth. Of course, we had a little hand in pushing the magic into the world wide web.

The show was a collection of coloful, magical, and cute that only Crowded Teeth could inspire.

We don’t know what was the best part, the art, the magical Crowded Teeth Cupcakes, or the awesome food from Lomo Arigato!

Where can you find Unicorns, Mermaids, cute Lolitas, and deliciously realistic food-themed jewlery? At Onch Movement’s Perfectasy opening party of course!

Our friend Onch (OnchMovement.com) threw a fantastic opening reception for his month long pop-up shop at Royal/t cafe in Culver City, CA.

We were captivated by the cute atmosphere that Onch put together. All of his deliciously realistic cakes made our mouths water. The bright and colorful displays of his jewelry and exclusive collaborations were done in a way only Onch could imagine.

Don’t you just love this wall of busts? All of these busts feature collaborations of Onch Movement necklaces that are all available through out the month of August at Royal/t.

All of the giant realistic food is also available for purchase. If only this ice cream were real!

The greatest part of this opening party, was the magical world that Onch put us in. From this amazingly sexy sparkle mermaid in a glass tank, to our wonderful sweet lolitas, to the epic glitter-hooved Unicorn, Onch did not skimp out on the magic.

Our talented friend Cicely Margo, was also there. If you don’t know who Cicely Margo is, you should definitely check her out. She had some collaborative pieces with Onch, and she is also the mastermind beyind our ‘Bubble Punch’ logo necklaces.

Not only is iam8bit famous for their retro gaming-inspired art shows, but they are also the brains behind the production of high profile geek-events such as the Street Fighter video game release parties, and the Scott Pilgrim party (like, MONTHS before the movie was event released to theaters).

iam8bit's newly renovated offices. Look for the giant "8" on West Sunset Blvd in Silverlake!

Their new offices are a little deceiving, with a decent sized front “store” space where one can buy art, prints, their book, and a collection of carefully selected or commissioned nerdy items (video game mascot hats, official “Nerdy is Sexy” Tees, & iam8bit headphones, just to name a few). As you walk towards the back, a door leads to a huge warehouse-like space, where fans were checking out the awesome art and amazing installations, challenging themselves to beat the top store of Galaga, watching live art paintings, and boppin’ to the music spun by our buddy DJ R-Rated (he’s spun at multiple Bubble Punch events before <3).

Octorock and a bunch of tortise shells scurried around the floors all night! They were giant plushies attached to the tops of roombas. SO cute, but also a little disturbing to bump into.

We were also pretty pleased to meet and chat with artist Dave Crosland, better known as King Gum, who did the kickass art for the official iam8bit event poster, contributed a sweet piece to the show, and also did a live painting during the opening party!

The night included live performances by chip tune style musical guests Leeni and A_Rival as well, using the balcony space overlooking the crowd.

Leeni had some awesome vocals to add to her chip music set.

Did we mention there was a HUGE Galaga setup? If you were the top ranked scorer at the end of the night, YOU WOULD WIN the arcade cabinet, which was custom painted for the event!! A huge line up ensued, and many tested their mettle…!

This vinyl sticker and the huge projection of the Galaga gameplay on the arcade machine made up the faux "world's largest arcade cabinet." Chubby Bunny realizes she cannot actually play the game by stepping on the sticker. Oops.

A staircase lead to their back “porch” area, which had a few curiousities of its own.

A photobooth area where you could slide the images of retro game characters in and out so you could put yourself in! Chubby Bunny doesn't make a very believable Princess Peach, though. Boo! Why does Toadstool look so pissed off in this illustration? haha.

It was a great party, as expected of our bros at iam8bit. We are really excited to see what other gallery shows these guys have lined up after this, as their space, energy, and awesome nerdiness never disappoints. Well done, guys!

IMATS (International Makeup Artist Trade Show) is the largest cosmetics and makeup artistry trade show in the world. They hold conventions in some of the most amazing international cities like: Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, London, and Sydney.

We reviewed Sugarpill’s glorious highly-pigmented pressed and loose shadows last year, and we continue to love and stand by them.

Color is definitely ‘in’ when it comes to makeup, but Sugarpill’s unique rainbow of matte and sparkly shadows is hard to replicate.

For $12 a pop, or as the lucky attendees of IMATS discovered: $8.40 a pop (30% discount), it’s no wonder we were having trouble keeping stock of the colors.

Lets get back to our IMATS adventure, shall we?

We trotted up to Oakland to work alongside the Sugarpill the week before IMATS to help build their undeniably cute booth.

The booth itself, was an experience! To say that building it was ‘hard work’ would be an understatement. The amount of vision, effort, and details that we all (Bubble Punch’s labor, and Sugarpill’s creative vision) invested in booth really states the quality and care that Amy puts into her makeup and her brand.

The army of Sugarpill lovers that kept us on our feet the entire weekend! We love you all, and big thanks to Kryolan who were saints in putting up with the crowd control.

The entire weekend can be summed up in these two words: Magically Intense!
All of us were busy taking orders, helping out the fans, and taking pictures. There was hardly a moment to sit and sip water. I’m sure plenty of our readers and Sugarpill fans can attest to the craziness.

Stocking Up! It was hard to keep up with the high demand of Sugarpill fans. Some people came back multiple times to check up on our stock.

IMATS itself was buzzing with lots of eager shoppers and makeup fanatics ready to devour all of the sights and sales. Plenty of the booths, including Sugarpill, were having 20-40% off sales for IMATS. There were student makeup competitions, guest speakers, and special classes for those wanting to learn, and even Beautylish threw a cute cupcake bash one night.

Sugarpill's booth was home to a few familiar YouTube faces like Queen Of Blending (above left) and Petrilude. We even had special appearances from Xsparkage, JazzieBabyCakes, MacNC40, and PurseBuzz through out the weekend.

On Sunday we were lucky enough to pick up a few of OCC’s Lip Tars (they lived up to their reputation!). Our friend and YouTube guru, JazzieBabyCakes, introduced us to the mesmerizing holographic lip glosses of Inglots. We wish we had more time to poke around Makeup Forever and the other wonderful booths, but alas, our hours were booked up.

Were a mixture of relief and sadness when IMATS came to a close on Sunday. We had so much fun helping pimp the Sugarpill booth, making new friends, seeing old ones, and gobbling up gorgeous makeup. If you missed out on this year, be sure to come see us again next year – we promise it will be even bigger and better!

Bubble Punch will be helping JapanLA host their 5th Anniversary and art show entitled: “Kittens & Ice Cream”. Who doesn’t love kittens OR ice cream for that matter?

Well, we sure hope you do, especially when it’s for good causes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue & Support (Coalition). This rescue and support coalition has been entering disaster effected areas of Japan in order to help animals in need and return pets to their owners. Over 40 of our artist & designer friends will be submitting cat and/or ice cream related artwork, accessories, and more for this event. We (Bubble Punch) are great lovers of cats and pets as well, and will both be donating our own pieces into this show.

Bubble Punch is proud to announce that MIGHTY HARAJUKU is coming to Los Angeles this weekend April 16 – 17, 2011!!

Japan has seen more than it’s fair share of tragedies lately. It’s definitely hit close to home for us here at Bubble Punch. This tragedy has effected many of our friends here, in Japan, and internationally. It was one of the driving forces in helping Sweet Streets and JapanLA with the #PrayForJapan charity art show last month.

Even recently, North East Japan was again rocked with a massive earthquake, following last month’s magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. It further displaced and devastated the North East coast of Japan.

So what IS the  MIGHTY HARAJUKU PROJECT?:

If you’ve ever seen the street style that has come out of Japan, then you have probably heard of Harajuku.

Mighty Harajuku was an inspirational idea born from 6%DokiDoki designer, Sebastian Masuda.

It is a call to the free-thinking youth of Japan, and the world, to come together and gather necessities for North East Japan. This effort is supported with the core idea of giving Japan it’s much-needed emotional support.

Though North East Japan has been physically devastated, it’s safe to say that all of Japan, if not those of us who have been inspired by Japan (especially Harajuku fashion), have been wounded by these tragedies. Mighty Harajuku carries the idea that this tragedy, that in every neighborhood: they are not defeated, they don’t have to go through it alone, and that they are not going to let this tragedy put a momentary halt on their lives or self-expression.

6%DokiDoki is making a pit-stop in Los Angeles this weekend, with a charity event, and parade to raise awareness and funds. All of the funds raised will be donated to the Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund at the Japanese Consulate in Los Angeles.

Space15Twenty is selling $5.00 MIGHTY HARAJUKU PROJECT charity buttons April 13, 2011. All proceeds will be donated to Japan Red Cross.

On Sunday, April 17, 2011, Bubble Punch will be helping 6%DokiDoki and Sweet Streets at the Space15Twenty flea market. We are accepting donated kawaii goods (in the vein of Harajuku) to be sold for charity. There will also be baked goods on sale, with proceeds going to charity.

Magic Level Up!

With the help of our team,  Meltdown Comics gallery space was refashioned into a sparkling setting, fit for a Magical Girls themed show. It was completed with a “Mickey Mouse Pink” stage for the musical guests.

Thanks to the hard work of Caro (Sweet Streets), wonderful “Magical Girls” inspired art from various international artists were made available for display. Renowned artists such as Camilla D’errico and Junko Mizuno were participants. Talented artists from Shibuya Girls Pop were also featured, all of them from Japan. Here’s a peek at a few of our favorite pieces:

We were so excited to M.C. the cosplay contest along with Tavuchi, owner of the fairy kei Japanese brand “SPANK!” She judged our many contestants and eventually picked out the ones she liked best! Thank you for everyone who came dressed up in their magical best!

On Saturday, April 2, Bubble Punch helped out with the special Meet & Greet and listening party event at JapanLA! The bands The Lady Spade and The Aprils were on hand to DJ the afternoon event, as well as take photos, sign autographs, and let fans hear their awesome CDs and view thier latest music videos!

COSPLAY CONTEST RULES:

Some of you have been waiting for this, and you’ll be happy to hear our rules are simple.

1. You can dress up as any magical girl character! Whether from a series, of an original magical character of your own design!
3. We do urge that you keep in mind this is an all ages public event, so don’t show up as a nude transformation scene!)
4. Our special guest judge, TAVUCHI, will be judging contestants based on magical cuteness.
5. We will be awarding 3 prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize!
6. All three prizes include different a gift bag that includes (but is not limited to): gift from Meltdown Comics, SPANK!, TokyoPOP, and our wonderful sponsors!

Now onto inspiration.
This time, we’re focusing on villains and bad girls also known as Dark Magical Girls. That’s right, not all Magical Girls are sweetness and goodness. There is plenty of magic to be had on the dark side as well. And, there are girls that prove, you don’t have to be goody-two-shoes to be the Magical heroine.

Ultimate Rebellious Magical Girls: Panty & Stocking

Panty & Stocking from ‘Panty & Stocking with Garter Belt’ are definitely Magical Girls, just not your typical ones. Panty (blonde) is addicted to sex, while Stocking (violet & pink hair) is a champion consumer of sweets. They are both kicked out of Heaven, as they were angels, and are now forced to kill monsters to gain coins that would allow them to return.

Complete with transformation and costume changes, even if there are stripper poles involved, there is no way you can’t love this edgy slap-stick Magical Girl Duo.

Jubei Chan & Her Heart Shaped Eye Patch

Though she can be confused with an Action Girl, Jubei-Chan is definitely a Magical Girl. Jiyu Nanohana is given a heart-shaped eye patch that turns her into the reincarnation of Yagyu Jubei (yes, that Jubei). Once transformed, Jiyu/Jubei pretty much lives up to the hyper-fictionalized super ninja legend. Try that for goody-goody.

Enter the Dark Versions, plenty of Magical Girl series have good girls gone bad. Sailor Moon R had this happen when Chibiusa was brainwashed and became Black Lady. Her costume then becomes darker if not sexier.

And to finish off this inspiration post, we have Princess Kraehe from Princess Tutu. She is the alter-ego of Rue, friend of our heroine.

As you’ll notice, Dark Magical Girls tend to be much more sensual as a direct opposite of the bubbly cute Magical Girl trope. So you really can’t say that there isn’t a magical girl out there for you. Whether she’s spunky and cute, shy, bubbly, dark, sexy, or just an all around bad bitch, she exists.

If you’ve ever read manga or watched anime, then you’ve come across the ladies of CLAMP! And if there’s anything from CLAMP you’ve definitely heard of, it’s the kick ass trio known as MKR (Magic Knights Rayearth).

CLAMP is a manga/anime giant! They have a distinctive story/art look. The appeal of their manga/anime has crossed both genders, and MKR is no exception.

If you like armor or swords, MKR is the way to go!

Adding to the CLAMP awesomeness, you’ve definitely heard of Sakura Kinomoto! Though you may recognize her in the TSUBASA Chronicles with her fellow castmates, she was the most popular magical girl of CLAMP history: Card Captor Sakura!

Bubble Punch!

Caro of Sweet Streets curated the event, JapanLA generously offered to give the work a physical home, and Bubble Punch was called in to arrange the logistics of the event and coordinate volunteers,and organize the raffle, drink situation, DJ, and donation sale table. To plan and execute a show of this magnitude within a week was an amazing feat, made possible by Caro, for having many sleepness nights gathering artwork, the artists themselves for producing and shipping their amazing pieces in time, the generous donations of products to be used in the raffle and for the donation sale table, and the kind heartedness of friends and strangers alike who donated their time to setup and execute the show both on Friday and Saturday.

We are so proud and happy that the event was so successful, and also that we were able raise over $11,000 during this event, (art sales are still ongoing at this time!), to donate to the Red Cross in order to aid relief efforts in Japan.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone who had a hand in this. No gesture was too great nor too small, and without everyone’s kind hearts this event would not have been possible. Everyone put the goal of raising money for the Red Cross in the forefront of their mind, sacrificing time, artwork, money, and (we know about this) a lot of sleep. This is what a labor of love truly is!

JapanLA recently relocated around the corner from Fuller at Melrose Ave, to a bigger, more visible location right on Melrose Ave! So how could we not let Rilakkuma and his San-X friends throw a love-themed party for everyone?!

As always, Rilakkuma showered his fans and friends with gifts, exclusive items at the store, and his guest appearance for the evenings festivities. Our friend Jenny Rae of Lil’ Rae Cakes even made special Rilakkuma cake balls for the morning events.

Many of Rilakkuma’s fans were there from the early hours of the morning, eager to shop and whisper special passwords (sent via facebook, twitter, and mailing lists) to receive free gifts and food items from our respective food trucks (Crepe n’ Around & The Grilled Cheese Truck).

Rilakkuma, though still only building his lovable notoriety here in the States (I mean he HAS thrown about 3 awesome parties!), definitely has some awesome fans. Daniele Firenze (Mean Girls) even popped in to browse the selection of San-X goodies, among others like Jose Stevens (Married to Rock).

The evening events were also not to be overshadowed by the early morning’s favorable reception. Rilakkuma made his guest appearance for photos, and brought a DJ to get the party pumping!

So thanks again everyone who made it out on Saturday! If you haven’t been to JapanLA’s new store, they are opening with new hours! You can still make your own Rilakkuma Valentine’s Day cards! Hurry up and go!

Onch, famous not only for his amazing jewelry, but also for his part in the show “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF” seasons 1 and 2, was the stimulus for this star studded event! His new jewelery line is sweets-themed, and likewise, so was the very sweet party.

Kitty in Pink, Sanrio's Retro 80s Prom

So if you haven’t heard, Sanrio’s “Small Gift: Los Angeles” event officially closed on November 21, 2010! We would especially love to thank all of you 80′s loving prom goers who glammed up and decked out for Sanrio’s 80′s prom event, “Kitty in Pink”!

We were extremely impressed by all of the wonderfully tacky, shiny, and awesomely 80′s outfits that guest arrived in. We couldn’t have dreamed of the wonderfully creative things everyone came up with.

8 Bit Weapon and ComputeHer definitely had some loyal fans at this event, as they mixed and played their chip tunes for fans live, with an interactive display of nostalgic 8-bit graphics moving behind them.

Or course, the costumes were super epic and we were so pleased that everyone went all out to try and win the prize for NERDIEST!

Luckily for us here at Bubble Punch, we were able to get a special sneak peak during morning set up! We even had the pleasure of taking one of the awesome Hello Kitty Smart Cars out for a work adventure. We were more than overly excited for the party.

The VIP party got started early. Some guests confessed to us they’d been waiting since late afternoon…! A long line of Sanrio enthusiasts wrapped around part of Barker Hangar where a collection of food trucks greeted them.

Inside of the hanger, there was free food and drinks galore! We were very excited that Pink’s Hotdogs had a booth and were giving away free chili dogs! Beard Papa and Yogurtland were also on site doling out more cream puffs and froyo than you can shake a stick at!

There are various carnival-like attractions in the hanger, like carnival games, a ferris wheel, mini golf, and adorable giant character heads floating above.

Being a VIP party, of course there was a red carpet laid out, and plenty of celebrities and artists in attendance.

Sephora also had a super cute display booth, previewing the Hello Kitty x Sephora collaboration makeup that will be on sale January 2011! Even the hand mirrors, combs, and containers were SO adorable!

For those of you who don’t remember, or would simply like to reminisce, we worked with Sanrio last year for their Hello Kitty’s 35th Anniversary events, and produced the  “Hello Kitty’s Bats & Cats Masquerade” event, which was a staggering success! For this year, all we can tell you is to please keep as much of the listed times for the 50th Anniversary Celebration free as possible! It’s going to be much bigger, and much, much better! Plus, this time ALL of Hello Kitty’s friends will be making their way to the big party!

Earlier this month, we helped Munky King release the newest creation by renown artist, Luke Chueh.  ”Black in White and Red All Over” was not only hugely successful for Munky King and Luke Chueh, but we were amazed at the level of dedication of Luke’s fans!!

The staff at Munky King got up bright and early on October 2, 2010 to decorate their store and gallery space with art and knives. Not to be out done, we showed up to help break a sweat. From blood stains, to knives, to bunnies bleeding all over, there was lots of decorating to be done.

However, no matter how early any of us showed up, Luke’s fans had all of us beat. The early bird line ran down the entire block. The first two fans in line even confessed to us that they had driven from Arizona and had been waiting since 7PM the night before!!! We admire that kind of love of art, especially because they waited not just through the night, but through a swelteringly hot Saturday.

More fans showed up for the evening party, and of course, to make their last minute purchase of the limited edition Black In White And Red All Over figures. The evening’s event also allow fans to chat up with Luke and admire the artwork that decorated Munky King’s gallery. And most importantly, it allowed them a chance to take pictures with not just Luke, but the Bunny Girl, Christy Marie. Her outfit was especially made for the event in honor of Luke’s limited edition figure.

Luke Chueh will be on hand to sign the super limited edition vinyl figure, which features a black rabbit in a white bunny suit, with a smattering of red blood all over from his latest kill! Eerie yet cute, fans will want to line up early to get these! This RED ALL OVER series is a variant of Luke’s original BLACK IN WHITE figure which will ONLY be sold via Munky King!

Bubble Punch is helping to produce a truly RED ALL OVER event, with epic blood splatter decor and music by DJs R Rated and Colby, along with complimentary beverages, snacks, and the YATTA Sushi truck!! We love those guys! Of course Luke Chueh and the mysterious RED ALL OVER girl will be in attendance, with a photobooth to capture the best of the night, so makes sure you come on over for the shindig!

Fans crowded around as Sebastian delved into his own brand’s image, and why he chose to start a brand based on “kawaii.”

His lecture included points about the development of Harajuku, as well as rare footage of Harjuku’s Omotesando pedestrian area in the 1970s. His primary insight into the evolution of Harajuku street fashion is that, although once flourishing with originality and DIY fashion, is actually now in a decline, because of the easy availability of cheap clothing, such as Forever21 and H&M. In retaliation, Sebastian has created 6%DOKIDOKI to bring back original kawaii to their shoppers!

After the lecture, 6% held a group Jan-ken-poi (or “Rock, Paper, Scissors” as we call it here in the states) competition to with special gifts from their brand! Everyone tried their best to win against 6% models Yuka & Vani. There were 4 winners in all! Congratulations to all the winners!

Day One – Saturday’s Opening Reception Night

Gallery Nucleus gets very sweet. 6%DOKIDOKI & SO SO HAPPY Windows

Last Saturday night kicked Sweet Streets 2 with a carousel of fun, fashion, and food. If you couldn’t make it down for the opening reception last weekend, the Sweet Streets show will be showing at Gallery Nucleus until October 4, 2010. So please check it out before it leaves! There were a plethora of taletned artists from all over the world in this show.

Day 0: Bubble Punch & the Nucleus Staff at the space setting up and finalizing the contests!

Before the glitter and sparkle of the opening reception, 6%DOKIDOKI had their model casting on Thursday, September 9, 2010. All of our lovely finalists were invited for a private interview and fitting with Sebastian Masuda (designer for 6%DOKIDOKI), Yuka, and Vani. Though only eight of our finalists were able to make it, everyone at 6%DOKIDOKI were very pleased with their selected finalists, and found it hard to choose only a few.

Our 8 Finalists: Mandie, San, Chloe, Danielle, Bebe, Chrissa, Calla, and Ari, with Sebastian and the 6%DOKIDOKI Shop Girls.

Because it was so hard to choose only 4 from the finalists, they decided to go with 5 (FIVE) girls in an unconventional selection method!

Sebastian picked all of the winners by tapping each one on the shoulder! Look at their excitement!

That’s right! Sebastian chose an unconventional way to select his winners after the short casting interviews! The contestants all closed their eyes and he selected them by taping their shoulders!

Saturday started early for us! All of the models, Sebastian, Yuka, Vani, Hihi Caro, Bubble Punch, and the Nucleus staff all were there early for last minute details and practice. The staff of Nucleus did a wonderful job setting up every single piece of art and arranging space and the runway for the show.

Makeup was provided by Sugarpill Costmetics. Our mua Candace and hairstylist Izzy work quickly on all the models.

Saturday night’s opening reception included not public viewing of all the art pieces at Sweet Streets, but a highly-anticipated bright fashion show by Japanese fashion brand 6%DOKIDOKI. The 5 models who won the 6%DOKIDOKI model contest got a chance to perform with the two 6%DOKIDOKI shop girls, Yuka and Vani. Fun and Fashion were the words of the evening.

Gallery Nucleus was packed wall-to-wall with guests. Everyone in their own fun and unique fashion, just admiring all of the wonderful art and dying to see the spectacle.

Tonight’s show will open up at 7PM  and conclude at 11PM. It will not only feature a collection of fun and fantastic artwork inspired by Japanese Street Fashion, but also include a fun fashion show and debut from Japanese Fashion Label 6%DokiDoki.

We got a chance to sit down and quickly chat with Caro, the busy dark-haired brain behind the Sweet Streets show. Not only is Caro curating the show, but also a photographer, and American represenative of Shibuya Girls Pop, a Japanese Artist Collective.

1 . Name/Blogs or Sites you own/What do you do full time? What are your other side projects at the moment?

My career began in high school, when I co-released records for Ivy League, members of Cobra Starship, and Acid House Kings.

I took on a lot of side projects in 2010, SWEET STREETS being the one that helped me define myself- through curating. I discovered Japanese artist collective “Shibuya Girls Pop” (http://www.shibuyagirlspop.com) which I proceed to manage professionally.  These girls are my full-time job.

Recently, I discovered photography (http://hihicaro.blogspot.com) which brought me full circle, photographing bands like The Young Veins, Polysics, and Melt-Banana.

Currently I’m scheming with my favorite magazine to produce mix tapes. Each, featuring a new fine artist and the music they create.

2 . What originally inspired your idea for the Sweet Streets shows?

There is no doubt that Japanese pop culture is making a huge impression on artists.  I wanted to get my favorite artists together and have a conversation about not only the influence of Japanese Pop Culture on Western Art, but also Japanese street fashion.

SWEET STREETS, on the surface, is an art exhibition inspired by Japanese street fashion.  To me, it’s also a show celebrating creative expression that was inspired by creative expression.  I think that is a really interesting abstract idea.

3 . What did you most enjoy about the first Sweet Streets Show?

My favorite part about the SWEET STREETS exhibit is producing the music compilation.  It is my own creative contribution to the exhibit.  The CD features exclusive tracks by my favorite indie Japanese music artists who are also relevant to the street fashion culture.  The most rewarding aspect is the great friendships I have made through this ongoing project.

4 . How is this year’s show different from last years? How will this show continue to evolve in the future?

SWEET STREETS 2 feels like my first year as a curator.   Being so young and new to curating last year, I limited my responsibilities. It was the gallery who championed the exhibit in the end.

This year, I was very hands-on and involved in every level of the show. From handpicking the artists, brainstorming themes and entertainment, taking flights to Tokyo to check on artwork in progress, and even overseeing 6%DOKIDOKI’s runway show.

We are happy to announce that Sweet Streets 2011 has been green lit. The show will be back in 2011, so look out for future updates about our exciting events for next year!

5 . How long have you been interested in Japan and Japanese Pop Culture? What is it that’s fascinating to you?

Japanese Pop Culture is fascinating as a contemporary culture that looks back to the past while also moving forward.  I’ve became interested in Japan while working in the music industry, which introduced me to Japanese talent and pop culture – my favorite aspect being anything “kawaii”.

Working with the Shibuya Girls Pop artist collective, focusing on “Real Japanese kawaii”, helps me understand it as a positive lifestyle expressed by modern Japanese girls.

6 . What are you most excited about this year for Sweet Streets Show?

SWEET STREETS is all of my favorite things under one roof, but I am especially excited about 6%DOKIDOKI’s involvement and supporting “Shibuya Girls Pop” in their first American exhibition.  It’s both humbling and incredibly important for the  exhibition to have a piece of street fashion culture represented.  Bonus, I get to do fun stuff like eat cotton candy with the 6%DokiDoki shop girls.

7 . Other interesting projects you have planned for yourself and LA?

Moving into 2011, I already have my mind set on the SWEET STREETS 3 exhibition and SWEET STREETS LLC., a company that I created to manage the “Shibuya Girls Pop” collective.  “Shibuya Girls Pop” is preparing its first major launch party and exhibition in America.  For myself, this means more trips to Japan.  For Los Angeles, it means more awesome art and Japanese fashion craziness.

We couldn’t let Rilakkuma’s last day go out with style of course! In honor of the relaxing bear, a pop-up Japanese styled nail salon was set up to pamper guests at the pop-up shop. Special decorative nail seals and charms were provided by San-X. You can’t have Japanese styled nails with out the decorations!

Once the nail salon was up and running it got quite busy fast! People began to line up and sign up for their turn.

Not one to let the guests go bored while waiting, two food trucks came to the rescue! Parked right outside the Pop-Up shop were the Yatta Truck and King Kone! Fresh and savory sushi for hungry fans, and sweet cold treats to counter the hot day.

Of course, in the usual style of JapanLA and Bubble Punch events; the first 50 people who gave us the correct password, received a free ticket for either truck.

Now if you’ve never had the Yatta Truck, we suggest you do! We also suggest you try their cream cheese roll. Epic is a word that falls short of it’s deliciousness! King Kone is no joke either! Try their regular soft serve with an array of toppings!

On Saturday, August 14, we opened the doors at 7326 Melrose Ave. for the 2-day San-X popup store! We had a line of people waiting to get in and get first dibs on the cute Rilakkuma and Mamegoma merchandise!

Our hardworking staff created a beautiful display of Rilakkuma goods for fans to oogle and purchase for the two-day pop up shop. During the day, we had the Crepe’n Around truck sercing up delicious crepes to those who knew the secret password of the day! The password was “RELAX,” and boy we had a good time making Zoolander-related jokes about that all day!

The evening party drew a HUGE crowd that wrapped around the block! The first 100 guests received a super cute giftbag full of Rilakkuma and Mamegoma goods! That night, we had Jenny Rae of Lil’ Rae cakes serving her delish cake balls to guests, as well as Takoyaki Tanota bringing us super fresh and super delicious takoyaki from their old school truck!

There wasn’t a corner that was left untouched by the San-X magic! Plenty of exclusive plushies from Japan were sent out for this very occasion.

The Invasion of San-X!

Even before the doors of the Los Feliz Umami Burger were opened, there was a long line of eager San-X fans waiting to be let inside! To their happy surprise, our first 100 lucky guests received exclusive San-X gift bags filled with goodies.

Who wouldn't accept gift bags from these two lovely ladies?!

But lets not dawdle too much on the gift bags, there were plenty of other things to keep the party thriving.  Inside, Umami Burger sent around trays filled with delicious treats ranging from fresh appetizers, to mini Umami sliders, bacon wrapped water chestnuts, cake balls by the ever popular Lil’ Rae Cakes! Rilakkuma himself was also present at the party, taking pictures with all his fashionable and enthusiastic fans.

We were also honored to have Mr. Chida, the current Director of Liscensing and next CEO of San-X, present to help us with one of our 3 raffles of the night! He thanked all of the US fans for coming out to support the event.

We’re very excited to be a part of this celebration and hope to see everyone for a weekend of fun!

Though we spent the majority of our Comic Con weekend working at the Munky King booth, we did manage to sneak off and enjoy the convention during our breaks. We additionally did take Sunday off work to enjoy a full day of Comic Con.

Work has turned us all into monsters.

My, my, there were plenty of people to be seen. Nix that, there was an unending wave of people. We spent the majority of Comic-Con witnessing the sea of people being herded like cattle around Warner Bros. booth. This may be due to a combination of celebrity signings as well as being located right next to gaming giants Capcom.

Concluding thoughts about Comic Con? The Scott Pilgrim marketing was freaking insane.

Scott Pilgrim Party. Bouncer Necessary!

There was a Scott Pilgrim themed food truck with free garlic bread. Having read the comics, we feel like this was unrelated to the comics. Can anybody confirm/deny Aside from the food truck, there was an exclusive Scott Pilgrim rooftop party with awesome schwag? The line was insanely long, and we commend those people who braved the line in the head. We desperately wanted to go, however by Sunday their doors had closed and moved on.

On Thursday, July 22, we kicked off the weekend of Comic-Con madness with Munky King’s “Omi Unmasked” party at Bar Basic. Tons of fans waited anxiously for the giftbags that included schwag not only from Munky King, but also from MINDstyle, Vannen Watches, Gelaskins, and much more!

Of course, the entire night was dedicated to the release of the Omi!

The Omi presents an innovative new platform that blurs the line between art and toys, uniquely designed to give collectors the freedom to create and collaborate the Omi how they choose. The DIY version of the Om, which was released at Comic-Con, offers a blank canvas with limitless customizing capabilities. The silhouette can be altered by choosing from the Series 1 accessories, which include the Monkey, Bear, Cat, and Horns. Unlike other vinyl toys, the Omi comes with a frame for collectors to display in the home as a 3D painting by itself, but can also be fitted to a larger 16-piece display frame, called the Omi Wall, or snapped together with another Omi Mask and transform into a Weeble Wobble.

Live paintings on giant omi-shaped canvases were the highlight of the party, featuring Dave Flores, Angry Woebots, Yoskay Yamamoto, and Joe Ledbetter!

We’re extremely excited to be participating in this awesome event! We hope that all 6%DOKIDOKI’s fans take the time to enter for a chance to be one of the models at this exciting fashion event.

The gallery was jam packed with guests enjoying the amazing artwork she had created over the past year for this opening. We had never seen this gallery quite as full as it was this night.

All of Natalia’s works were inspired by her love of all things “kawaii” and Eastern. The models in all of her work, whom she always refers to as “hookers”, are friends of hers she has encountered who represent strong and beautiful womanhood in the current world.

We were lucky enough to be approached by Natalia to be immortalized by her classically trained painting techniques into a beautiful work of art. Seeing the work brought tears to our eyes.

Natalia also created an enormous chandelier created from laser-cut plexiglass, sparkling pink chain, and thousands of Swarovski crystals. We would kill to have something like that in our house!

Before the gallery even opened, Natalia had sold 8 of her 12 new pieces she created for this collection. We were happily informed that our painting, “Happy Friend Tree,” sold to a private collector in Hong Kong!

Marking the end of E3 in Los Angeles, Iam8Bit in conjunction with Universal Studios threw this bash. We were really excited to be invited. Nerd parties fuel us!

For those who don’t know, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is based off the comic “Scott Pilgrim” by Bryan O’ Malley. The movie is opening in theaters in August and the final volume of the comic is due out in July 2010

The film stars Michael Cera as the title character, who has to defeat his love interest’s 7 evil ex-boyfriends.

Keg Buffet! Who says Nerds don't know how to party?!

The party was not only super fun, it was awesome! There was an epic Keg Buffet with different varieties of beers and ciders to choose from. There was also a separate dance room, as well as a lounge area where people could play the unreleased video game.

The cups provided at the event also served as Scott Pilgrim Collector items. And for those who had to wait in line to get in, the Frysmith food truck was parked outside as to keep everyone warm and fed.

Fun things to do at the party!

On a whim, we decided to also enter the raffle that was on going at the party. Various prizes included tickets to the premiere of the movie, regular movie tickets, and signed copies of all 5 Scott Pilgrim books. As fate would have it, Chubby Bunny won all 5 of the books signed by Bryan Lee O’Malley!!

Bubble Punch!

We had such a blast at this party! We even got nice goody bags at the end of the evening that included a Character T-shirt (there were several different characters) and a movie poster!

Kudos to Iam8Bit and Universal Studios for putting on such an awesome party!
