8 Bits of Satisfaction

On Thursday, August 11, the newly renovated iam8bit offices opened their doors to a crowd of game-loving self proclaimed nerd-sters to celebrate the opening of their SUPER iam8bit show and the release of their artbook of the same name. In classic iam8bit style, the fans turned out in hordes for this amazing event.

Not only is iam8bit famous for their retro gaming-inspired art shows, but they are also the brains behind the production of high profile geek-events such as the Street Fighter video game release parties, and the Scott Pilgrim party (like, MONTHS before the movie was event released to theaters).

iam8bit's newly renovated offices. Look for the giant "8" on West Sunset Blvd in Silverlake!

Their new offices are a little deceiving, with a decent sized front “store” space where one can buy art, prints, their book, and a collection of carefully selected or commissioned nerdy items (video game mascot hats, official “Nerdy is Sexy” Tees, & iam8bit headphones, just to name a few). As you walk towards the back, a door leads to a huge warehouse-like space, where fans were checking out the awesome art and amazing installations, challenging themselves to beat the top store of Galaga, watching live art paintings, and boppin’ to the music spun by our buddy DJ R-Rated (he’s spun at multiple Bubble Punch events before <3).

The crowd and the world's largest "arcade cabinet" in honor of Galaga's 30th anniversary!

Check out pics of the artwork, superfun installations, peeps and report after the jump!

Deliciousness in All Forms: LA Street Food Fest Preview & IOTA Cafe Review

On Thursday night, July 7th, we were invited to the media preview for LA Street Food Fest, which turned out to be so much more than just tons of delicious bites from vendors who will be participating in the big event on July 16th.

The event was hosted by the minds behind the LA Street Food Fest, Marcus Beer & Shawna Dawson (also of Sauce LA), as they MCed the night introducing the people and food involved in the upcoming Food Fest.

Held at the soon-to-be-open IOTA Cafe in Koreatown (They open sometime next week, we hear!) the newly finished space was abuzz with food bloggers and journalists, trying out the amazing dishes which will be served at the LA Street Food Fest from the Mighty Boba Truck, Glowfish Truck, and IOTA Cafe’s special items.

You might need to wipe the drool off your keyboards after looking at these photos. You have been warned!

Mighty Boba Truck was a first for us, and we were surprised to find out that they serve MUCH more than just boba teas! Founded by three childhood friends, Mighty Boba serves a delicious selection of Taiwanese food such as Taiwanese sweet sausage, Marinated Tofu steak, Sweet Butter Toast and Island Pork Chops. AND BUTTERMILK POPCORN CHICKEN. Yes. You heard me correctly. It is amazing. Thanks to Frances and Luca for being sweethearts and chatting with us about their food!

Mighty Boba Truck's Popcorn Chicken! A Taiwanese street food staple, this is their number one seller. It's slightly spicy, and deliciously crunchy. This was one of our favorite bites at tonight's event.

Mighty Harajuku, L.A. Loves You!

Bubble Punch is proud to announce that MIGHTY HARAJUKU is coming to Los Angeles this weekend April 16 – 17, 2011!!

Japan has seen more than it’s fair share of tragedies lately. It’s definitely hit close to home for us here at Bubble Punch. This tragedy has effected many of our friends here, in Japan, and internationally. It was one of the driving forces in helping Sweet Streets and JapanLA with the #PrayForJapan charity art show last month.

Even recently, North East Japan was again rocked with a massive earthquake, following last month’s magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. It further displaced and devastated the North East coast of Japan.

So what IS the  MIGHTY HARAJUKU PROJECT?:

If you’ve ever seen the street style that has come out of Japan, then you have probably heard of Harajuku.

Mighty Harajuku was an inspirational idea born from 6%DokiDoki designer, Sebastian Masuda.

Image from ElectricAlice.com

It is a call to the free-thinking youth of Japan, and the world, to come together and gather necessities for North East Japan. This effort is supported with the core idea of giving Japan it’s much-needed emotional support.

Though North East Japan has been physically devastated, it’s safe to say that all of Japan, if not those of us who have been inspired by Japan (especially Harajuku fashion), have been wounded by these tragedies. Mighty Harajuku carries the idea that this tragedy, that in every neighborhood: they are not defeated, they don’t have to go through it alone, and that they are not going to let this tragedy put a momentary halt on their lives or self-expression.

6%DokiDoki is making a pit-stop in Los Angeles this weekend, with a charity event, and parade to raise awareness and funds. All of the funds raised will be donated to the Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund at the Japanese Consulate in Los Angeles.

Space15Twenty is selling $5.00 MIGHTY HARAJUKU PROJECT charity buttons April 13, 2011. All proceeds will be donated to Japan Red Cross.

On Sunday, April 17, 2011, Bubble Punch will be helping 6%DokiDoki and Sweet Streets at the Space15Twenty flea market. We are accepting donated kawaii goods (in the vein of Harajuku) to be sold for charity. There will also be baked goods on sale, with proceeds going to charity.

Please come out and show your support! This is a FREE all ages event!
